Apple iPad vs Obama

Posted on 28 January 2010 by Lucy

The level of discussion and commentary on the Apple iPad in online media channels over the last 24 hours has been phenomenal. To illustrate:
State of the Union – 9,000 Tweets Per Minute
iPad Launch – 7,000 Tweets Per Minute……

Check out more about the buzz on social networks on the iPad launch from Retrevo and their Buzzmeter here.

A poll that online magazine brandchannel ran a while back asked its readers to identify the brands with the greatest impact on their lives and Apple took out the top place by far.

Why? Apple has a relentless focus on their values and a well defined raison d’être.

As Apple COO Tim Cook said on an earnings call last year, “The values of our company are extremely well entrenched. We believe that we are on the face of the earth to make great products, and that’s not changing.”

On the Brands create Customers Blog, Brian Phipps describes this:  “What Apple taps into here is the brand as destiny. It’s the brand as primordial power, a prime mover of creation, culture and context, and never, ever, an add-on.”

At least Obama’s State of the Union had a longer sustained chatter after the event completed….. although too early to tell if this will continue to be the case!

There. Are some great insights here on the Apple brand but for existing customers there are some product discontinuities.

I already have a iPhone which i do use to read books on & lots more. I pay for an expensive data plan & use WiFi as much as possible but i cannot use my SIM in the new iPad. That needs to be solved.

BTW I have 3 Macs which do everything well.

I will be looking at the iPad in US when im there soon &would like one but in NZ it might be a WiFi only device like my iTouch which i still have but forgot about.

IPad if it was SIM enabled on regular networks (and i use XT ) might replace the next macbook but too early to say.

A macbook with a mobile data card might be a better bet.

I also note that when carrying around machines my black plastic one is much lighter than the others.

Also this comment was entered via my iphone which is the very best device i’ve ever had.

Perhaps target for iPad is non Mac users? (And children?) My 8 yr old daughter saw iPad on the news and had asked for one for her next birthday so its clear that the device has very wide appeal.

But maybe less appeal for existing Mac users?
