Google Blog Search added RSS feeds (at last) today. As Readwriteweb said “no self-respecting search engine of dynamic content would be without and described the developments as “catch up moves”, rather than innovation as usual from the Big G.
I really enjoyed another RRW post today on Friendfeed, highlighting how the company could challenge social media/online conversation tracking services such as Radian6, ScoutLabs and Sysomos (Test to you three, as social media monitoring services how long does it take you to find this and comment, first to comment wins, imagining I have just made a damaging slur against your client they need to know about. I am sure you are tracking your own mentions!)
Strategic tactics suggested in the article were:
1. “Broaden the index beyond opt in” – the site currently only tends to be use by early adopters, proactively discovering and importing user feeds needed. Hard to do social media-wide search due to scale and speed at which you have to move to be providing complete coverage.
2. Cut Spam
3. Carry job titles through from LinkedIn
4. Better analysis of what users like, e.g. what they are reading.

RSS feeds for search queries were added, something that no self-respecting search engine of dynamic content would be without. Hot search queries and recent posts from popular blogs round out the slight redesign of the Blog Search home page.

FriendFeed was already the best way to learn what early adopter social media users were saying about any topic across blogs, Twitter, delicious and other diverse social media sites. If FriendFeed wants to step it up to the next level and challenge business-class conversation trackers, we believe there are four steps the company needs to take.

Google says the addition of the feeds has been its most requested feature for Blog Search. Users can subscribe to specific topics or stories. There is a “subscribe” heading in the left-hand column on the site, and underneath that are links for Atom and RSS

From me: I like this. While we are not always dedicated to blogging, we continue to go on about our lives with probably much more interesting things in real-time than we get around to blogging about. Question is how much of these things you actually want to stream from a privacy perspective, some love doing it , some want full privacy – its a personal decision and neither right or wrong. I think for me its more things that I think others can learn from and action in their own lives in a professional interest and world issue sense.

You may have noticed that Twitter has started hyperlinking hashtags. Those are words preceded by a “#” which denote what the Tweet is about and makes it easier to search for Tweets about specific topics and events.

I think we’re placing too much importance on the numbers and paying far too little attention to the actual reasons why followers can be valuable to us.

Hi Lucy, that was definitely an insightful article from RWW, real-time is key in today’s world. Spam in social media content is a big challenge (absence which is something we are proud of in the Sysomos platform).
